Fight Memory Loss

Contact Cleveland's Major Memory Loss Research Center

What kinds of memory loss studies are offered? There are a variety of memory loss studies offered at the University Memory and Aging Center, which is affiliated with University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University. Some studies look at Alzheimer's disease, and some examine other diseases causing memory loss. Some require visits in person; some are done by telephone and mail and do not require a visit.

Is there a cost? All research activities are voluntary, confidential, and free of charge. Most studies take place at the Fairhill Center, 12200 Fairhill Road, Cleveland, where parking is free.

What benefits do families gain from taking part in research? Our families say that participating in our research program offers:
  • The opportunity to help future generations by making a personal and valuable contribution to finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease and other memory problems;
  • Free medical benefits that may include yearly neurological exams, medications in development, and feedback to your family physician;
  • Support from dedicated medical, nursing, and social work professionals who are caring, knowledgeable, and accessible;
  • Knowledge about memory loss from first-hand access to new research findings and an informative newsletter.
What can we expect on our first visit? Your first visit takes about three hours and includes a brief physical examination as well as memory testing. To provide a fuller picture, both the person with memory loss and their caregiver answer questions during the visit.

How about on other visits? There's a follow-up visit each year that provides valuable information to compare with your first visit. You will be invited to take part in some of our studies; the number of visits will depend on the type of study. A drug study may require weekly visits at first, and then taper off. A study on vision, on the other hand, may mean only one visit.

If I'm taking Aricept, Exelon, or Reminyl, can I still participate? You may be able to participate in many studies like family history, caregiving, or vision. Some studies may require that you stop certain medications before beginning in the study.

How can I get involved? To participate, call Kathy Shaw at the University Memory and Aging Center, at 216-844-6400 or toll-free at 1-800-252-5048.
